The morning radio guy's weather forecast for today:

"Today it's going to be partly ridiculous to mostly stupid, with windchills reaching ten, no twenty, no thirty, no FORTY below zero."
No joke, that's really what he said.  Didn't even bother with the actual forecast.  I love that station.

And it's true.  The thermometer says -8 degrees right now.  Air temp, mind you.

Ummmm....the snow's really pretty......?

road trip
10:34am 12/06/2008
Husbandman and I are on the road to Madison, WI for a timber frame home open house. It's cold, snowy, and we just drove past the airport (wah). Alas, we didn't bring our passports, so my suggestion to say screw Madison and get on a plan to the Bahamas was shot down, lol. We'll see how happenin' downtown Madison is, instead of downtown Nassau. :-P

Today I'm thankful for:
--beautiful snows
--(hopefully) recession-proof professions *crosses fingers*
--a very nice Thanksgiving yes still )

Listening to my regular local (and admittedly leftist) Chicago radio station, they just played MLK's I Have a Dream speech, followed by the excerpt of last night's victory speech where Barack Obama used the words yes we can as puncuation marks. I thought last night when I watched and listened live that parallels between those moments should be drawn and I'm glad I turned the radio on just in time to hear my (not-so) silly morning show do it right. Yeah, they're a rock station, not a talk station. Just a really smart rock station. Heh...now they're playing U2. What else, but Pride?

There's a part of me that is filled with pride for my country and the millions of us that actually came out and voted, made our voices heard. Hell, Obama won Indiana..traditionally one of the reddest states in the union. But my vote helped to do that. And the votes of so many others that are often too apathetic to bother. Yet, there's another part, the cynical part that says, good god, with the mess the country is in, we'd have to be IDIOTS to put the same party in the White House. That part thinks that to truly be proud of my countrymen and women, Obama should have won by an FDR-caliber landslide. That same cynic feels kinda silly for feeling so inspired by a mere politician, she's on guard, waiting for the other shoe to drop. I mean, really....can this country really have another JFK? A decade of apathy doesn't really cultivate the seeds of hope, yanno?

I dunno. Beggars shouldn't be choosers, right? I wasn't around for JFK, could this truly be what it was like when he hit the national scene?

Heh...on the radio they're talking about "Obama-palooza" last night in Grant Park and how awesome the city looked. They're right, the skyline was sparkling in a clear, autumn sky. You could see the giant ferris wheel on Navy Pier when the camera angle was just right, and the softly lit pediment of the Field Museum as a backdrop when they shot north-to-south down the length of Grant Park. I can't decide if I'm mad at myself for not going down there or not. I am happy that I got to see how the city looked to the rest of the nation. I love being from Chicago. Second City my big South-Side Polish behind, lol.

Wish my mom would've lived to see our first black President. While I'm not sure she would've voted for him, she always had a keen appreciation for witnessing and experiencing history in the making.

I'm an EXECUTRIX....
03:27pm 10/25/2008

Doesn't that just sound exotic and sexy...? Turns out that is the feminine form of the word "executor." As of an estate. I finally got around to going to the bank today and opening the account to start officially settling mom's financial affairs. Six months to the day of her death, now that I notice the calendar. I couldn't help but laugh out loud when the nice bank lady said that word. I actually said Sounds like I should go get some tall black boots or something. She laughed and replied, yeah, does sound a little close to dominatrix doesn't it?. Hah! Not a word that typically comes up in the polite conversation of Saturday morning banking, I would imagine.

So, that's done. And I hope to take a few days off of work next week to do some of the physical running around that must be done to close accounts and whatnot. Brotherman has yet to secure himself a mortgage (or a second job) to buy me out of my half of mom's house. Meh. I certainly hope he gets his ass in gear pretty soon. We took an entire truckload of junk out of the house last weekend, most of which has already gone to the donation drop-off or straight to the garbage. It's sad really, how little of what has that house packed literally to the ceiling is even worth keeping.

Time for a shower and a manicure, methinks. And maybe I'll go shopping for some knee-high black boots, lol.

One of my hospitals, in an effort to blow all the budget money left before the take-over, is taking the whole department to a CE dinner on the fancy schmancy Odyssey dinner cruise on Lake Michigan tonight. It's going to be a beautiful night, the cruise ship launches from Navy Pier, and my best friend from college and her husband are going.

The problem? I don't wanna go.

I don't feel like showering, getting dressed (in real clothes!), and being a social butterfly all night. All I want to do is pretty much lay on the couch and stare blankly at the television. I'd be fine to not leave the house one single time all weekend. I think if it wasn't too late (and too jerky) to cancel, I'd stay home for sure.

What the hell am I going to be like come wintertime??!!

Hmmm...the website recommends "cocktail attire" for women. Do you think they mean the jammies I normally wear when indulging in alcoholic goodies??

what a couple of weeks!
09:37pm 08/28/2008
In the past two weeks, I've bought a forest, slept beneath the stars (and seemingly surrounded by coyotes) in said forest, gone to the symphony (complete with Yo-Yo Ma), gone to a ballgame (complete with fireworks and skydiving Elvi), gone to a housewarming party for a man whose crusts I used to cut off of his PB&J sandwiches, shopped for and bought a storage shed for aforementioned forest, and, oh yeah....worked and did chores and visited the grandma and the grandpa.

Death through freak supernatural incident

You are going to die in a freak vampire/werewolf incident. I would start carrying garlic and silver bullets if I were you. There is something weird about your demeanor, and evil is attracted to you. Plus you may be a little attracted to evil too.
